What is Vaping?
Vaping, the act of inhaling water vapor through an electronic cigarette or other personal vaporizer or device, is a form of tobacco harm reduction. Vaping devices come in many different sizes and offer a wide range of functions but they all work in the same basic way. They heat a liquid that contains flavoring and nicotine until it vaporizes and is inhaled by the user. They do not involve combustion nor do they need a match or lighter to use. Two stigmas from tobacco cigarettes, ash and odor, are non-existent with vaping.
Ingredients in E-liquid
The great taste and quality vape you have grown to expect is the result of very few ingredients. Unlike their tobacco counterpart, e-cigarettes and e-liquid are comprised of 4 main ingredients. They are: vegetable glycerin (VG), propylene glycol (PG), flavorings and nicotine.
Vegetable Glycerin is a clear and odorless liquid that is usually plant based. VG is used in many food applications because of its sweet taste. Besides food, VG can be found in shampoos, lotions and toothpaste.
Propylene Glycol is FDA approved and used in many different products. It appears in coffee-based drinks, sweeteners, ice cream and soda. It can also be used as a solvent in many pharmaceuticals.
Nicotine is alkaloid that can be found in the nightshade family of plants (tomatoes, eggplants, etc.) Classified as a stimulant, nicotine poses very few health risks but can be habit forming.

Nicotine Levels in E-liquid
Unlike tobacco cigarette smokers, vapers can choose the level of nicotine they wish to consume when it comes to vaping. Experienced vapers appreciate the ability to make decisions regarding their nicotine strength but it can be confusing to new users. E-liquids are offered in levels varying from 0mg/mL to 24mg/mL.
0mg/mL is the option for those that enjoy a nicotine-free vape or are trying to quit nicotine altogether. Many vapers start with a higher level of nicotine and over time they will gradually lower their nicotine levels and consumption.
3mg/mL is the nicotine strength most commonly used by vapers, especially if they are “drippers” using rebuildable atomizers or advanced “sub-Ohm” tank systems.
6mg/mL is the level predominately used by vapers using a tank device. Many who use this level will also switch back and forth between vaping and smoking tobacco cigarettes, and those who use chewing tobacco or nicotine gum.
12mg/mL and higher is the nicotine strength coveted smokers that smoke a pack of cigarettes daily and on a regular basis. These levels are also good for vapers using cartomizer systems.
18 and 24 mg/mL are for heavy smokers. If someone smokes more than a pack a day for several years these are the levels of nicotine they will desire. These levels are also good for closed tank systems and starter setups for users transitioning from traditional combustible tobacco products.
How Do E-Cigarettes and Vaporizers Work?
All personal vaporizers work in the same way with the same components. They consist of:
Battery or Other Power Source
Provides the power to vaporize the e-liquid.
Houses the batteries and circuit board for higher functioning devices - this transfers power to the atomizer.
Where the e-liquid is stored.
Atomizer (Cartridge or Cartomizer)
Houses the coil(s) that are coated with e-liquid - these coils are heated to produce the vapor.
A replaceable wire that is wound like a coil. Coils are “wicked” with cotton wadding.
Material that absorbs e-liquid.
The vapor is delivered through this to the user.
